About Flip Side Notes

Flip Side Notes is an independent guide to old and cult films. We write about the movies that played at midnight, filled the bottom half of a double bill, ran on Saturday morning television or quietly shaped Hollywood before most of us were born, and about how to find and watch them today.

The name comes from records. A single had an A-side, the hit, and a B-side on the flip. Hollywood's double features worked the same way: a big studio picture and a cheaper "B" movie to go with it. Many of the films we love now started life on the flip side.

What we cover

  • Cult Films & Midnight Movies: how cult followings form, and the films that earned them.
  • B-Movies & Drive-In Nights: low-budget genre films, creature features and the drive-in era.
  • Classic Hollywood: silent films, the studio system, pre-Code pictures and film noir.
  • Vintage Cartoons & TV: theatrical cartoons and television from before streaming.
  • Watching Old Films: public domain films, archives, restorations and formats.

What we do not do

We do not host or link to pirated films. When we say where to watch something, we point to legal sources: public domain archives, libraries, official releases and licensed services.

About this domain

This address once belonged to an independent record label in San Francisco, and later to a personal blog about film screenings. Flip Side Notes is a new and independent project. It is not that label or that blog, does not sell their records, and is not affiliated with them or their former owners.
